What We Believe

First Baptist Church of Media believes the Bible to be the Word of the living God, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. We rejoice to testify to the truth of the virgin birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, His sinless life, His vicarious death for sinful humanity, the efficacy of His shed blood, His bodily resurrection and ascension, His present ministry as intercessor and Advocate, and His personal, premillennial return for His own.

We are an independent Baptist church. As followers of Jesus, we are a part of the larger Universal Church; the worldwide spiritual body of Christ. We are otherwise unaffiliated with any other denominational office or organization. Our support comes solely from the members of our local congregation.

The History of First Baptist

Since its foundation, First Baptist Church has created a long tradition of preaching the Gospel and serving the people of South Eastern Pennsylvania and beyond. In 1871, a group of 13 Baptist believers gathered in the Media borough court house for the first prayer meeting of what would become our church’s first congregation. The group grew in size and began meeting in private homes for preaching and prayer. Within a year, enough funds were raised to construct their own church building. On May 2, 1872 the building was completed and dedicated to the worship of God. Almost 140 years later, the structure still stands and is used for the Sunday school room and nurseries.

January 24, 1909 celebrated the opening of a new, larger building. To this day we gather in its auditorium to praise and worship the same God who gave our first generation the vision to begin First Baptist so many years ago, and who has richly blessed the thousands of men and women who have been making First Baptist their local church home ever since.

If you do not have a church home, we invite you to consider joining our membership and add your own page to First Baptist’s history.
